What is hybrid training and its benefits.

Why Hybrid Training Is Essential for Boosting Performance in Hyrox, CrossFit, and Athletic Conditioning

Hybrid training is more than just a workout—it’s a complete approach to fitness that blends strength, conditioning, and endurance to build both physical and mental resilience. At Gomez Personal Training in Epsom, hybrid training is our version of CrossFit, designed to improve athleticism, boost performance, and enhance mental health. This well-rounded method creates what we call the All-Round Athlete—someone who’s not just fit, but fast, strong, mobile, and mentally tough. Whether you’re aiming to level up your sports performance or simply want to train like an athlete, hybrid training delivers real, lasting results.

My Journey with Hybrid Training: How I Built the All-Round Athlete Approach to Fitness

In my experience having not long got myself back into the fitness world I found CrossFit being my starting point, I first got in touch with Jon and the starting point for us was a field he had me running around that field. firstly, to see my general fitness and I must add what I thought I’d be able to run and what I ran were completely two different things.

I was shocked in my over-all health which then gave me more determination to sort it out and try harder each time. My progress within WEEKS went from being unable to run round the field to able to run around it a few times being left not breathless or struggling to breathe as much as I was previously.

From experience and training with Jon Weight-lifting / weights wasn’t something I was interested in at all because I didn’t want to become a bodybuilder or have the bodybuilding look being a women I just wanted to really sort my health out through fitness doing the things I particularly enjoy such like running, swimming, rowing, gymnastics; types of fitness which is mainly athletics being my more enjoyable ways to train

Weightlifting does have its benefits when it comes to strength and conditioning (Clean & Jerk and Snatch). It is good to add this to part of your fitness plan which Jon has guided me through so it hasn’t been unbearable or unenjoyable it can be fun if done in the right way.

I can now run 4-5k, I struggle to even lift my own weight at 5’6″ and 56 kg, despite being told I look athletic. As previously mentioned, weightlifting and using weights wasn’t something I wanted to do or was interested in, but after incorporating this into a hybrid-cross training program, I now use this determination to keep trying until I can perform at least three pull-ups. These are some of the tips Jon gave me, and I use them to help me strengthen myself so I can reach this goal.

The Mental Side of Hybrid Training

What most people don’t talk about is how hybrid training in Epsom sharpens your mindset just as much as your body. This style of training builds mental discipline, focus, and grit—qualities that carry over into every aspect of life. The real impact of hybrid training Epsom clients experience isn’t just during the workout, but afterwards. It’s in the mental clarity, reduced stress, boosted confidence, and the inner resilience that grows over time. It’s more than physical fitness—it’s a complete mind-body transformation.

The Goal: Becoming the All-Round Athlete

Picking a program suitable for yourself could never have been easier, inside or outside of a gym there is a hybrid programme that would suit you at your own pace to get the results you want.

There are many hybrid training programmes you can follow at your own pace.  Not everything has to be a race!

Example of a hybrid fitness programme combines different types of training to achieve a balanced fitness level which is training without a thong; COUGH Bodybuilder…

Monday – Strength training upper body 30 min plus 30 min easy run

Tuesday – Interval running workout

Wednesday – Strength training lower body + mobility work

Thursday – Tempo run at track

Friday – Rest day or active recovery

Saturday – Functional training workout

Sunday – Long slow distance run

Tips on getting started ⬇️

  • Balance your weekly training
Combine 2–3 strength sessions with 2–3 conditioning workouts. Think deadlifts and squats one day, followed by interval runs or sled pushes the next.
  • Prioritize recovery
This style of training is demanding. Prioritize mobility, sleep, and nutrition to stay on top of your game.
  • Train with intent
Every session should have a purpose. Whether it’s building power or improving your aerobic base—train smart, not just hard.
  • Work with a coach
Programming matters. A well-structured hybrid training plan ensures progress without burnout or injury.

Conclusion and Next Steps

One of the most valuable lessons I learned from Jon was that rest and recovery are just as important as the training itself. It’s easy to push too hard at the start, but overtraining often leads to injury—and recovery isn’t always a quick fix. That’s why finding the right personal trainer or self-conditioning coach made such a difference in my journey. It wasn’t just about working hard, but working smart—with a plan that delivers maximum results.

Hybrid training in Epsom provided the perfect balance. It’s a flexible, adaptable approach that meets a wide range of goals. As a modern-day learner, I found that the variety within hybrid training kept me engaged and consistent. That variety—paired with expert guidance—was the key to my success training with Jon. Whether it was strength work, conditioning, or mobility, hybrid training gave me the structure and support I needed to thrive.
