What to Look for in a personal trainer?

Good coaching traits come from experience. You can’t study a degree in sports science/strength and conditioning at a top university like Loughborough to learn coaching traits, unless you work there! Coaching traits are developed competitively through sport or work environments. Advising athletes comes from understanding athlete lifestyle and advising the general public is developed through the understanding of what is known as “general” lifestyle, the life cycle rat race that most people are in. 

Assessing goals is a trait we learn when we are competing regularly or in the work sector. 

Counselling clients is a fundamental commitment in personal training. If you’re looking to become a personal trainer, you must learn to deal with various emotions in your role, and if you’re looking for a personal trainer you don’t want someone with no understanding to coach you through tasks, otherwise its training and not “personal” training. They must understand your needs, commitments and roles. 

The demonstrator leads by deed and not by tongue. Showing client’s a positive portfolio and trust through actions. 

A trust worthy friend whom has your best intentions at hand, it’s not all about money, if it is, then business is not dealt with justly. 

The art of teaching is being able to make things simple to understand. The facilitators role is to provide simplicity, to not overcomplicate training and be able to adapt to overcome.

Working as a certified trainer doesn’t mean you will be working solo straight away in your own private gym, being able to work with a team is how to become successful. I’m sure this is a question we have all asked throughout the journey. You go to the gym to train for a specific goal from fat loss, muscle building to athletic performance. We all have these thoughts, you need to remember it always gets harder as you get better. Consistent progressing check-in appointments are best to keep track of where you are and where you are going. 

This ties in with questioning every move, we must curious in order to reach our goals, we have to live and breathe what we preach. The same goes when you are trying to transform yourself into the ultimate YOU. 

Diligent coaching is part of the success process, its a lifestyle change. Your coach should be questioning everything with a humble; why are you doing this, with a suggestion to change, adapting to overcome.
